New Chairman for RHS Britain in Bloom Judges - (Posted Thursday 1st January 1970, 1:00am)
D11th December 2007 Roger Burnett, Parks and Countryside Manager for Scarborough Borough Council, has been appointed as Chairman of Judges for RHS Britain in Bloom. Roger succeeds Jim Buttress who retired after serving as Chairman for three years. Jim Buttress received the RHS Britain in Bloom Lifetime Achievement Award in September for his commitment to the campaign. Roger has been vice-chairman of the panel for three years, and a national judge for five years. Roger is also a member of the Yorkshire in Bloom Executive, as well as a Yorkshire in Bloom and Green Flag judge. Roger will oversee the panel of 13 judges and guide them through both the summer judging tour and the recently introduced unannounced judging in the spring. Roger said, ?I am very pleased to take on the role of Chairman of Judges and intend to further the campaign by working with the RHS team and our partners to introduce a five-year plan early in 2008. RHS Britain in Bloom is a highly effective environmental campaign but we need more communities to take part to ensure it grows from strength to strength. As chairman of judges I hope to help increase participation and ensure more communities throughout the UK have opportunity to benefit from the campaign.? RHS Director of Science and Learning, Simon Thornton-Wood, said, ?We welcome the appointment of Roger as Chairman of Judges for RHS Britain in Bloom. The RHS have been custodians of the Britain in Bloom campaign since 2002, and during that time we have had the opportunity to work with many horticultural expert judges as well as over 1000 Britain in Bloom communities and more than 400 Neighbourhood Awards communities who all volunteer thousands of hours of their time each year to the Britain in Bloom cause. ?Working with Roger and the team of judges, as well as the Regions and Nations in Bloom, the RHS intends to continue to expand our community gardening programme through the Britain in Bloom campaign and bring the joy of gardening to even more people in the UK.? The RHS Britain in Bloom judges volunteer many hours for the campaign including the solid two-week full time summer judging tour, a week of unannounced judging in the spring, attendance at meetings, awards and speaking appointments. The launch of RHS Britain in Bloom 2008 will be held in Roger?s home town of Scarborough on the 28th February 2008. Scarborough will also be competing in the 2008 UK finals, having achieved a Gold Standard and winning the Coastal Category in RHS Britain in Bloom in 2006. RHS Britain in Bloom is open to any community wanting to make a difference to where they live. For more information or to get involved, go to www.rhs.org.uk/britaininbloom

STOCKTONS GOT THE FLOWER POWER! - (Posted Thursday 1st January 1970, 1:00am)
27 September 2007
STOCKTON is bursting with pride at winning Best City in the Britain in Bloom competition, organized by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
The award comes hot on the heels of its success in winning Gold in the Best City category in the prestigious Northumbria in Bloom awards recently. The competition encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting improvements to their local areas and is the largest of its kind in Europe which involves floral features, permanent planting, wildflower meadows, planting for nature, fruit and vegetable gardening and much more.
In winning the for Best City category, the judges awarded Stockton a Silver Gilt award, with rivals Dundee and the London Borough of Brent both gaining a Silver award.
This is the second time Stockton has been given the opportunity to represent the North East, winning Silver in 2006.
The 68 finalists were judged throughout the summer by touring RHS judges who traveled the length and breadth of the UK looking for the quality floral displays, permanent landscaping, sustainable development local environmental quality and public awareness.
Judges were impressed with Stockton Borough and The Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom Judge Roger Burnett says: ?Stockton-on-Tees are making a determined effort to achieve a year-on-year improvement in their local environment. The engagement with sponsors and local interest groups was commendable and we were particularly impressed by the exceptionally high standard of seasonal bedding in terms of plant quality, variety and design.?
Councillor Jennie Beaumont, Stockton Council?s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: ?This is absolutely fantastic news for Stockton. A great deal of hard work, dedication, planning and commitment goes into making the town bloom not only for the competition but all year round for the people of the Borough to enjoy. The Care For Your Area team have once again shown their excellence and I heartily congratulate them for everything they do to make our entry a success.?

Visit to Wykeham Trees, 16 November 2007 - (Posted Thursday 1st January 1970, 1:00am)
IOH Northern Branch is due to visit Wykeham, near Scarborough, on 16th November. The venue is Wykeham Mature Plants, where established trees and shrubs are available for re-planting. On 16th November members are urged to arrived by 10 am, whatever the weather, and if the weather so dictates, to bring wellies. The aim is to see the whole process, from the removal of mature trees from the ground, to packing, and loading ready for distribution. There will of course be an opportunity to visit the entire growing and sales area under the eagle eye of David Crossley, MIHort.
To reach the site from the West on the A170, once you have left Brompton by Sawdon, look out for the first turn to the right just before the main road goes uphill at Ruston. Take this lane to the right until you see an imposing gateway on the left. Take this entrance, and you will find the nursery on your right, and a car park through the hedge on your left. Having parked, go back across the road to the office area. Eric Richards will endeavour to be there first to check on the plan for the day.
A sketch map is available on the internet:
http://www.wykehammatureplants.co.uk/Dawnay/WMP/accessorypages/contactus/map.aspx
If you are travelling via the A64, leave it after leaving Rillington, and take the left turn to Snainton. (The road sign looks like a gibbet) At Snainton turn right on to the A170. Please be aware that Snainton is a favourite spot, [and rightly so] for police speed checks.

Second win in a row.
Patrick Wiltshire has done it again. The Northern Regional Final of the Institute of Horticulture?s Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition, held at the Stockbridge Technology Centre, Cawood, near Selby on Saturday March 31st. was won by last year?s winner Patrick Wiltshire from East Yorkshire. It was a convincing win this year, with Patrick using his buzzer to great effect, as the other seven contestants from across the North of England could only watch in amazement as Patrick ratcheted up his score. Patrick will now go forward to the National Final of the competition at Glasnevin Botanical Gardens, Dublin on April 28th, where he will compete with the other seven Regional winners from across Britain and Ireland for the prestigious Percy Thrower Trust?s Young horticulturist of the Year title and a £2000 travel bursary.
Patrick walked away on Saturday with a cheque for £100 for his hard work, with the sponsorship for this and the other prizes coming from the generosity of the North of England Horticultural society, organisers of the Harrogate Spring and Autumn Flower Shows (www.flowershow.org.uk) . Patrick also took away a spade and fork set, donated by Rollins Bulldog Tools Ltd (www.bulldogtools.co.uk) . Some of items for the identification rounds were donated by the RHS Gardens Harlow Carr (www.rhs.org.uk ) and Armitage?s Garden Centres of Huddersfield. The eight contestants have come through college heats to win their place in the regional final and there have been more than 1000 students across Britain and Ireland taking part of this year?s competition.
This year?s competition was held the Stockbridge Technology Centre in Cawood near Selby, with the Chief Executive, Graham Ward, presenting the prizes. The centre carries out trials and research for commercial growers from across Britain and Europe and provides help and guidance to growers on a wide range of horticultural and allied issues. Roger Burnett receives Branch Commendation - (Posted Thursday 1st January 1970, 1:00am)
At the recent Branch Annual Meeting of the Northern Branch of the Institute of Horticulture, held at Howick Hall, Northumberland, Roger Burnett, Head of Scarborough Borough Council?s Parks and Open Spaces, received the Annual Branch Commendation for his contribution to horticulture of the North of England. Roger can be seen receiving his award from Tony Girard FI.Hort, the President of the Institute of Horticulture at the recent annual meeting.
Roger?s considerable length of service with Scarborough, from his beginnings over 30 years ago, has led him and the people of Scarborough to a string of richly deserved awards, culminating in a Gold Award in last year?s Britain in Bloom competition. Like all good managers, Roger has made a particular point of involving all of his staff in the decision making processes that affect their place of work and their hard work has also been rewarded.
Through Roger?s hard work and dedication to duty and the authority has won them three Gold Medals at RHS Tatton Flower Show and the National Flower Bed Competition.
Roger also works tirelessly as a judge for the Yorkshire in Bloom competition and the IoH Northern Branch Committee felt this year that Rogers?s hard work and dedication deserved recognition.

Young Horticulturist of the Year - 2007 - (Posted Thursday 1st January 1970, 1:00am)
After the success of the 2006 competition, when we had over 1000 students taking part and over £7000 worth of sponsorship nationwide, the organisers of the 2007 are hoping to include more students and to be able to offer higher prize money than ever before. Since last year, the North of England Horticultural Society has increased its regional sponsorship to £900 and, through sales of produce from our stands at the Harrogate Flower Shows and the continued national sponsorship by Nat West Bank we have sufficient money in the bank to be able maintain the level of prizes at heats and regional finals. Heat prizes will be £50, £25 and £20. Regional Final will be £100, £60 and £40, with all regional final winners receiving a new prize from Bulldog Tools of a Spade and Fork set. National Final is still £1500 travel bursary for the overall winner. If you are able to source extra sponsorship from within your organisation or other organisations, please do so. If you are unable to run a heat this year but would like to send your students to one of the other heats please let me know so that I can link you up with an appropriate centre. Dates for your diaries so far are: 1. IOH Northern Regional Final - Saturday March 31st at the Stockbridge Technology Centre near Selby - this will be an all day event and includes a tour around the centre to see the work with other IOH members. 2. IOH National Final - Saturday April 28th at the Glasnevin Botanical Gardens near Dublin. The Powerpoint Presentation CDROM Heat Competition will be available by early December and so your heats will need to between December 2006 and March 2007. I look forward to you all being involved in the 2007 competition and hope that I can get to see some if not all of the heats. Kindest regards Graham Porter F.I.Hort. (IOH Northern Branch Chairperson and YHOTY Organiser) PS - If you are not already an IOH member you may wish to consider joining - you can get further information on the benefits of membership from the 'About Us' section of the website, and download an application form here.

Global Horticulture Initiative : An agenda for the 21st Century - (Posted Thursday 1st January 1970, 1:00am)
Over the past decades, progress has been made to improve the lives and food securities in many regions of the developing world. Nevertheless, extreme poverty is still a critically pressing global issue, with 1.2 billion people worldwide living on less than US$ 1 a day. While in the past, steps have been taken to alleviate poverty and to ensure food security, the proportion of people who live in extreme poverty has not been reduced. Children are hit hardest by the global pandemic, with 1 billion children worldwide being malnourished - placing the next generation of the developing world at a serious disadvantage.
To address and create a global and unified plan for development, the United Nations passed the United Nations Millennium Declaration which set for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals lay the ground work for a global partnership on development - now with definite and tangible objectives. In a holistic view, the MDGs call for improved access to education, protecting childhood and maternal health, and sustaining the environment.
This appeal coincides with advances in biological science and communication technologies that provide unprecedented opportunities for agricultural scientists and development experts to collaborate as a global research and development community. Horticulture has a vital role to play in addressing these goals. [Source : Global Horticulture Initiative (http://www.globalhort.org)]
